Gag City
Welcome to Gag City — the pink metropolis where brands and stans live.
Ahead of Friday’s release of “Pink Friday 2,” Nicki Minaj’s fifth studio album and follow up to her debut “Pink Friday,” AI-generated images of pink-toned cityscapes filled Twitter. The dreamy false utopia that is Gag City ruled by Minaj and her Barbz crashed stag Twitter and became a viral meme that brand books turned into Trojan horses for free marketing — promoting Minaj’s album.
Is this an actual stan led campaign to hype Minaj? Is it a plant for the album and brands to game engagement? The manufactured or not viral moment is a win for Minaj.
This was back in September when Minaj began teasing the cover art for the album online. On a pink subway car, Minaj rides through pink clouds, above a futuristic (and obviously pink) pink city skyline behind her.
After being called out by other Barbz, who mocked her corrupted words. She and her Barbz began referring to the album’s release as “Gag City,” NBC News reports. Where gay slang to describe being so amazed that you’re at a loss for words. You might be gelled by witnessing a stunning outfit change, or hearing a perfect record, like”Pink Friday 2.” Cars with Minaj’s face appeared, propped against a pink concrete jungle that stans had started to post leading up to the release. Jokingly speculating that fictional characters and celebrities were already descending. Upon the unattainable but magical creation that was now referred to as Gag City in preparation for her album. Comprised in one of the first, posted December 1 on Know Your Meme. A fan account posted an image of a pink plane emblazoned with “Gagg City” flying over a similarly pink skyline.
Fans stood told to ‘prepare for landing’ before the release, and Minaj also teased a description of her pink utopia. AI generated renditions of the descent into Gag City were the response from Barbz.
